The Idea of a Landscape
Photo 1:
The photographer has chosen to make the photographer really dull and barren. The photographer has excluded things such as trees and wildlife. The relationship between the landscape depicted and the photographer could be that it was a place he used to go to when he was younger. The landscape looks like something was one there but over time it eventually withered away. I think this because the land and rocks look sparsely populated and they are all different shapes and sizes. The vantage point of the landscape is very low and straight. I think that the photographer was only up to a few metres away from the landscape. This is because the image is clear. The photograph was also taken in 1855 which means it was taken on film. The photographer clearly wanted a viewer to receive an ominous feeling from the landscape. The mood that is being communicated by the choices the photographer has made it quite mysterious. The landscape is called "The Valley of the Shadow of Death" which indicates the photographer was not aiming for the photograph to be seen as happy or joyous.
Photo 2:
The photographer has included the blue dusty background and a man on his horse. The photographer has excluded the rest of what is going on. I think that if the photographer captured the whole image then there would be things such as violence and possibly injured men. The relationship between the landscape depicted and the photographer could be that he stumbled upon the men and their horses to take a photograph. The vantage point from which the landscape was taken from is at the centre-point. This is because the man would have been able to capture the man and the horse in the same image. The mood that is being communicated be the choices the photographer has made is strange.

Minimalistic Landscapes
Both photographs show depictions of nature and trees. In the first image I find it strange how the tree itself is very bold and standing out but the background is plain. The tree also looks like it was cut out from a separate image and stuck onto a piece of black card. In the second one it looks like some sort of leaf. I think this because of the way it it shaped and it looks small. For the first image looks peculiar as it looks like it does not belong. The second image looks undeveloped because it looks like not much thought or effort was put into it. I would attempt to make the first image by printing out a photo of a tree. I would then turn the photo black and white to eliminate any colour and cut the shape of the tree out. But I would make sure to take out any background that is still showing. For the second image I would print out my image of a leaf and draw the outlines in order to make it look almost empty. The artists may have missed out parts of the landscapes to highlight different parts. I prefer the first image because there is more to look at and it looks more interesting.
